İş ve aile yaşamı arasındaki denge on yıllardır hem kadın çalışmaları yapan akademisyenler hem de feminist örgütler tarafından dünya genelinde gündeme getirilmekte. Konu, bir yandan ev işleri ve çocuk bakımı gibi ücretsiz çalışma işlerinin eşler arasında eşit dağılımı çerçevesinde tartışılırken diğer yandan çalışan kadınların sosyal ve kişisel bakım aktivitelerine ayırabilecekleri zaman açısından ele alınmakta. Dünya genelinde yapılan zaman araştırmaları, kadınların ev içerisinde yapılan bu ücretsiz aktivitelere erkeklerden daha çok zaman ayırdığını göstermekte. Türkiye İstatistik kurumu’nun 2006 yılında gerçekleştirdiği Hane Halkı zaman araştırmasına göre çalışan Türkiyeli anneler günlük 2 saat 8 dakikalarını, çalışan erkekler ise 51 dakikalarını ev işlerine ayırıyor. Bunun yanında ev içerisindeki işlerin “kadının görevi” olarak görülmesi toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri çerçevesinde içinde bulunan kültürün davranış kalıpları ve streo tipleri geliştirmekte olduğunu gösteriyor. Ayrıca Avrupa Yaşam Kalitesi araştırmalarına göre Danimarka'da evli çocuklu ve çalışan kadınların ev içi işlerini üstlenme oranı %80 iken erkeklerin %51. Bu araştırmalardan yola çıkarak evli çocuklu ve çalışan kadınların Avrupa ve Türkiye’deki yaşamları iş, aile ve sosyal yaşamları arasındaki denge ne kadar benzer ya da farklı sorusu “İşten Sonra Bir Gün (One Day: After Work)” belgesel fotoğraf projesini hayata geçirmeyi tetikledi. Projede evli, çocuklu ve çalışan 25-45 yaş arası annelerin gündelik hayatı gözlemlendi. 6'sı Dan 6'sı Türk 12 katılımcı ile gerçekleşen projede Avrupa ve Türkiye'de çalışan kadınların gündelik hayatlarındaki benzerlikler (ve farklılıklar) irdelenmeye çalışıldı. Proje Eylül 2011'de Aalborg Universitesi'nde açılan sergi ile noktalandı. Serginin açılışı aynı zamanda Aalborg Üniversitesi'nde yeni kurulan Eşitlik, Çeşitlilik ve Cinsiyet (EDGE) Enstitüsü'nün açılışı ile denk getirildi. Sergi Aalborg'da 1 ay sergilendikten sonra Aarhus Kadın Müzesi'nde 1 Şubat - 1 Mart arasında sergilenmek üzere taşındı. Serginin bir sonraki durağı İstanbul olacak.

Launching Reception for EDGE





On 15 September EDGE hosted their launching reception and opening of a photo exhibition with works by the Turkish photographer and gender researcher Sehlem Sebik, who visited FREIA Center for Equality, Diversity and Gender in August-September 2010. We were extremely pleased with the large turnout for our reception, in spite of the fact that it was also national Election Day, and we would like to thank Ulla Langballe warmly for her priceless assistance with all practical details. We also take this opportunity to thank for presents from far and wide, not least the present from our two deans who teamed up to donate one month’s guest professorship to EDGE. Thank you very much, and we look forward to naming the professor who is coming to visit.

For those who did not have time to see it on the day, Sehlem Sebik’s photo exhibition of women’s everyday life after work is open at 3 Kroghstræde (start at room 3.228) till the end of October, when it is going to move to the Women’s Museum in Aarhus. At the moment we are looking into the possibility of publishing her photographs in a printed form. And Sehlem has asked us to say that she will be very grateful for any reactions to the exhibition. A notebook is available at room 3.228 for writing comments.

Tyrkiske Sehlem Sebik undersøger med sit kamera hverdagens rutiner i familier i Danmark og i Tyrkiet.

Emner som omsorg for børn, børnehaveafleveringer og skolegang, madlavning, fritid, tid med børn, tid til sig selv osv afbildes i hverdagens rutiner. Trods ligestilling gør kvinder stadig mere husarbejde sammenlignet med mænd, og de bruger mere tid sammen med børnene. Dette ses i udstillingen, hvor familiernes gøremål omkring børn og hjem følges i Danmark og Tyrkiet en dag: "One Day".

Fotografiet er valgt som metode til at vise kvinders daglige rutiner "One Day". I forsøg på at sammenligne har de valgte mødre relativt samme profession, alder og social status.

De er alle gift, har arbejde og er mødre og lever i byområder og alderen varierer mellem 25 and 45. Alle har en mellemlang uddannelse. Sehlem Sebik besøgte i alt 12 husholdninger fordelt mellem både Danske og Tyrkiske familie.

Dokumentarprojektet er støttet af FREIA (Feminist Research Centre) og EDGE (Centre for Equality, Diversity, Gender) begge Aalborg Universitet. Billederne viser fuldtids arbejdende mødre fra to forskellige kulturer efter arbejde "One Day".

Udstillingen ledsages af opsummeringer af undersøgelser af tidsforbrug i familier fra hhv. Turkish Institute of Statistics i 2006 og the European Quality of Life Survey fra 2010 af European Foundation om livs- og arbejdsbetingelser. De viser, at kvinder udfører flere arbejdsopgaver i hjemmet end mænd i begge lande.
Tyrkiske mødres bruger 2 timer og 8 minutter til husarbejde og børnepasning. Tyrkiske mænd 51 minutter. Fædres arbejdstid udenfor hjemmet er til gengæld længere end mødrenes.
Den europæiske undersøgelse viser at 80% of kvinderne mod 51% af mændene in Denmark dagligt varetager arbejdsopgaver i hjemmet.

Tyrkiske mænd har en arbejdsuge med 55 timer i gennemsnit, mens mænd fra de Europæiske lande arbejder færre timer.

Begge lande har love og reguleringer for arbejdstid, barselsorlov og offentlig børnepasning, men de er noget forskellige. Barselsorlov i Tyrkiet er 16 uger for kvinder, 3 dage for fædre, mens danske forældre har 52 uger betalt barselsorlov tilsammen.

Projektet rejser således også spørgsmålet om, hvordan regeringer har indflydelse på hverdagsliv gennem brug af love.

The balance between professional life and domestic life is a subject that has been the object of many scholars through the last decades. Much research focuses on women’s daily routines, equal share of the household chores (cooking, cleaning etc.), childcare (caring for and educating children), social life, and personal care activities. In addition to that, time statistics analyses in most countries claim that working women do more house hold chores compared to the men, in the family. Depending on different surveys and countries the distribution of domestic duties by gender changes from culture to culture. The values of the culture affect the relation between gender roles and unpaid house works. To emphasise and visualize this issue, a cross-cultural photography project was carried out in Denmark and Turkey named “One Day”.

The documentary project was the work of photographer Sehlem Sebik, who was supported by the Danish Government Cultural Scholarship, FREIA (Feminist Research Centre at Aalborg University) and EDGE (Centre for Equality, Diversity, Gender at Aalborg University). The project aimed to show working married mothers’ “One Day” after work. The goal of the project was to observe one day of working mothers in two different cultures. The first question was: “Are there similarities between the working mothers’ lives despite the differences between the cultures and the levels of development of the two countries? According to the research by Turkish Institute of Statistics in 2006 and the Second European Quality of Life Survey made by European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions in 2010, women do more house chores than men in both countries. Turkish working mothers spend 2 hours and 8 minutes for house hold chores and child care activities. Turkish men spend only 51 minutes on this kind of chores. In general, Turkish working mothers and house wives spend 5 hours and 17 minutes on this kind of tasks in one day. The European quality of life survey shows that the percentage of involvement in daily household work is 80% of women and 51% percent of men in Denmark. Both countries have legislations of average working hours, maternity leave, and public childcare services, but they are slightly different. Turkish men have a longer working week with 55 hours a week on average, men in other European countries work shorter hours. The average number of weekly working hours in Denmark is also lower compared to Turkey. Maternity leave in Turkey is 16 weeks for women and 3 days for fathers, whereas in Denmark parents have 52 weeks of paid maternity leave in total. The project should also be viewed in the light of these facts and the viewer should question how governmental power affects our everyday lives through the use of legislation.
Photography is selected as the method in the project to show women’s daily routines in “One Day”. In an effort to make the sample groups homogenous, the volunteers were selected among mothers that are similar in terms of profession, age and social status. Married working mothers who lived in urban areas were selected as the target group. The ages were between 25 and 45. All of the attendants had bachelor’s degrees. The project took place in 12 households with both Danish and Turkish families. Before the photography sessions, a questionnaire and a time schedule form detailing typical weekly schedules were filled by the volunteer. The observations of photographer of different households also directed the project naturally. Only mothers’ and families’ daily routines were captured. The positive acquisition of the project was understanding another culture without prejudgments through face to face communication. The families with children followed nearly the same routines as dictated by the children’s school hours, day care centres’ hours and the parents’ working hours. The exhibition is arranged to display the12 women’s “One Day” after their work with this similarity of modern life.
The exhibition can be seen at Aalborg University, Kroghstræde 3 in the area outside rooms 3.115 and 3.117 between Sep. 15th (opening reception between 14.30-17.30) and October 31st.
